To prevent the spread and infestation of bark beetles, the ideal time to prune your pines is in the winter when the bark beetle is not actively infesting new hosts.  By the time the season changes to spring and warmer temperatures arrive, the tree has stopped the flow of sap out of the pruning cuts, which attracts bark beetles.
